Introduction:

Artificial insemination (intra-uterine) is a fertility treatment included in The Healthcare Basket
This treatment is given to people who have trouble conceiving
The kupot cholim do not cover the cost of insemination that is performed on shabbat

Artificial insemination (intra-uterine) is a fertility treatment included in The Healthcare Basket.

  • During the course of this treatment, the sperm is injected directly into the woman's uterus. There are different methods of artificial insemination and the most common is intrauterine insemination.
  • The procedure may cause side effects that generally subside within 14 days.

Who is Eligible?

  • Artificial insemination is performed in couples that are able to produce eggs and sperm but otherwise can not conceive naturally. For example if there is low sperm count a problem with sperm motility, and in a case of a woman with mild to moderate endometriosis.
  • Maccabi Health Services limits eligibility to those age 45 and below.
  • The National Council for Obstetrics recommends that from a medical point of view, 4-6 treatment cycles per year ma be allowed. The Clalit Health Services does not limit the number of treatment cycles. Contact the other health funds regarding their policy of number of cycles provided.

How to Claim It?

  • Artificial insemination is performed by a gynecologist.
  • The man brings sperm to the laboratory. In the lab the sperm are rinsed and the ones that have the best motility are collected (this process is called Sperm Enhancement). These sperm are injected by the doctor directly into the woman's uterus through a special catheter.
  • The insemination is timed to be done in coordination with the woman's natural cycle.
  • If pregnancy not a achieved after several cycles of intrauterine insemination the couple is referred to receive In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment.
  • If the spouses belong to different health funds, the sperm enhancement process is done in the man's health fund and the insemination is done in the woman's health fund.

Please Note

  • Hospitals do not perform artificial insemination on shabbat.
  • Women who undergo insemination on shabbat may not be eligible for reimbursement or funding from their health fund (for example "Maccabi" does not cover insemination performed on shabbat.
  • In order to ensure that the sperm collected from the man for artificial insemination or IVF is the sperm that is injected into the woman's uterus (and that someone else's sperm was not accidentally used), the couple can hire a fertility treatment supervisor.
