Introduction:

Carriers of the BRCA1 or BRCA 2 genetic mutations are entitled to routine tests for early detection of breast cancer
There are medical centers dedicated specifically to carriers, assisting in organizing information, making appointments for tests and testing
The tests are performed free of charge for women who are eligible (check the payment arrangement for the tests with your HMO)

Women who test positive as carriers of the BRCA1 or BRCA 2 genetic mutations are at higher risk for breast and ovarian cancer then women in the general population.

  • These women are entitled (free of charge) to routine test for early detection of breast and ovarian cancer, including:
    • Breast MRI, performed once a year.
    • Breast ultrasound or mammography, performed once a year.
    • Blood tests for cancer markers, performed twice a year.
    • Vaginal ultrasound, performed twice a year.
    • Doctor consults according to need (oncologist, breast surgeon, gynecologist, etc.).

Who is Eligible?

  • Women found to be carriers of BRCA 1 or BRCA2 genetic mutations through Genetic Testing.
  • Men - there is a special clinic for testing and followup for male carriers. For additional information see the Bracha website.

How to Claim It?

  • You can utilize this right on your own through your HMO, in accordance with the arrangements of the HMOs with the various hospitals that perform MRIs and ultrasounds.
  • Because there are many tests involved and it is very important that there is regular follow-up, it is recommended to use a medical center that specializes in routine testing for carriers and that has an agreement with the various HMOs.
  • For a list of medical centers that specialize in carriers and instructions on how to use insurance see the BRACHA website.
Tip
  • The HMOs periodically change their policies regarding providing hitchayvut (commitment of payment) and the centers for carriers periodically change the costs of the tests.
  • These details should be checked with the HMO and medical center.

Additional medical rights for carriers

  • Carriers that decide to have a preventative oophorectomy (removal of ovaries) are entitled to Egg Freezing (Oocyte Cryopreservation).
  • Carriers that want to get pregnant can go the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) route and perform pre-genetic testing (PGD) in order to ensure that their children are not carriers of the mutation. Contact the HMO to find out the cost of this process.
