Trains and train stations must be accessible to the blind and visually impaired who travel on Israel Railways in accordance with the details that follow.

Train Station Accessibility

  • A train station must be accessible in the following ways:
    • The information at the station that appears on the posted timetables is able to be transmitted via fax or telephone and appears in large print.
    • The information booth in the station is marked using contrasting colors, and a low-frequency buzzer is installed to help the visually impaired locate the booth.
    • Stairs, walls, doors and clear partitions in the station are marked for the visually impaired.
    • The electronic information boards at the station (that indicate times and destinations), display the information in yellow on a dark background and the letters should not move across the board.
    • At least one automatic machine for obtaining information or issuing tickets (assuming there are such machines at the station), must have instructions written in a tactile writing system and Braille.
  • Anyone with a Certificate of Blindness/Visual Impairment can purchase in a Center for the Blind in Israel store a controller for audio systems that dispense audio directions in the stations (at a subsidized price of 15 NIS).

Accessible Train Cars

  • Every train must have at least one accessible car, indicated by the international symbol for accessibility (a person in a wheelchair).
  • A train car is defined as accessible when:
    • It contains special seating for those with disabilities, the blind, and the visually impaired.
    • Stations are announced using both visual and auditory means.
    • The entrances/exits, stairs, hand grips, handles and knobs are marked in bright colors.

Assistance for Blind and Visually Impaired Travelers

  • Blind and visually impaired travelers are entitled to assistance getting on and off the train, as well as reserved seating in an accessible train car. For this service, call the information center at *5770 at least 6 hours before travel.
  • The assistance may be arranged by sending a travel arrangement form, or by calling the information center at *5770.
  • A blind or visually impaired traveler who travels lines regularly on specific lines at specific times can point this out in the first notification and the assistance will be available for future trips as well, without the need for further notification.

  • Information regarding accessibility of stations appears on the Israel Railways website on each station’s webpage, on the webpage listing all the stations, as well as throughout the website’s trip planning process.
