The inpatient programs are rehabilitation programs under the auspices of The Ministry of Health and are the first step in the process of drug detox.

  • Hospitalization generally lasts between 2-3 weeks for adults and up to 3 months for children and adolescents.
  • Each unit has a medical and nursing staff that guide the patient during his/her stay as well as a psycho-social team that prepares the continued treatment based on the patient's needs.
  • There are also inpatient units that treat people who have co-morbidity of mental health issues and addiction

Who is Eligible?

  • A drug addict (based on a urine test and medical history) that agrees to the treatment and has a doctor who thinks hospitalization is necessary:

How to Claim It?

  • The inpatient units can be contacted in the following ways:
    • The addict or a family member contacts the social service center. A social worker will guide the person to do the required testing and get the necessary documents and then refer him/her to the rehab unit.
    • The addict him/herself contacts the rehab unit directly.
    • A referral through the medical framework (Kupat Cholim clinic, general hospital as part of a discharge plan, or the mental health system).
  • After the person has a referral to the rehab unit, an intake - including a medical and psycho-social evaluation and medical tests - is performed.
  • The following tests and documents are required:
    • Chest x-ray
    • EKG
    • Current medical records from the family doctor
    • Additional lab tests (best on the unit's doctors)
    • Israeli residents must present an ID card or passport to prove residency.
    • A tourist must provide a detailed medical history and history of addiction, previous treatments, current medications (if there are) and dose amounts as well as contact information and identifying information of the treatment center abroad in order to verify the details.
  • The tests can be done in the Kupot Cholim according to the referrals from the rehab unit.
  • Acceptance into the unit will be within a few days of the intake and is contingent on the approval of the acceptance committee.
  • The patient must sign a "treatment contract" before treatment begins.
  • Treatment in a public rehab unit for adults is included in The Healthcare Basket and requires a one time deductible payment of 600 NIS.
  • Private units each establish their own payment amounts.
