Introduction:

Long-Term Care Benefit recipients who are hospitalized in a general hospital are entitled to continue receiving their personal benefit services for the first 30 days of hospitalization
Someone who is released after an extended hospitalization (or is released from a hospitalization in a nursing home), will have his eligibility renewed and receive the same benefit of care level he was entitled to before the hospitalization, without any conditions involving the length of the hospitalization.
Starting in May 2017, a Long-Term Care Benefit Claim can be submitted for someone slotted to undergo surgery or someone who is in the middle of a current hospitalization.

According to one of the Long-Term Care Benefit conditions of eligibility, an eligible recipient must live at home or in an independent section of a sheltered living facility.

  • With this, recipients who are hospitalized in a general hospital are entitled to continue receiving the personal care services provided as part of the benefit, to help with their personal needs in the hospital, during the first 30 days of the hospitalization (this benefit was increased from the first 14 days to the first 30 days of the hospitalization as of 01.02.2017).
  • If a recipient is eligible for and normally goes to an elderly day care center, the day care center will send a caregiver to the hospital to enable that patient to receive the nursing care services to which s/he is entitled.
  • If the recipient receives personal home nursing care, it is preferable that the services in the hospital be provided by the usual caregiver. It is important though to take into account what the patient wants in determining who will care for him during the hospitalization.
  • If the hospitalization lasts more than 30 days, the benefit services will cease from the 31rst day and on.
  • Starting in May 2017, a Long-Term Care Benefit Claim can be submitted for someone slotted to undergo surgery or someone who is in the middle of a current hospitalization.
  • Long-Term Care Benefit entitlement will be restored to the level it was prior to hospitalization for anyone released from the hospital within 90 days of admission.

Who is Eligible?

  • Seniors meeting Long-Term Care Benefit conditions of eligibility who are hospitalized in a general hospital. Eligibility is for the first 30 days of hospitalization.
  • Eligibility does not include a person who is hospitalized in a designated hospital (according to his registration certificate), the hospitalization for nursing care, complex nursing care, mentally frail or rehabilitative patients only. These hospitals are not considered general hospitals.
